What are Ants?

While most ants eat nectar, fungi, and seeds as their main sources of food, some ants have unusual diets that include tiny mammals, birds, and reptiles. Ants are notorious for destroying rubbish, crumbs, and leftover food. One of the most interesting things to know about ants is that they can carry up to 5,000 times their own weight in food and supplies for their homes!
Around the world and in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware, ants are among the most prevalent insects. Worldwide, there are currently about 12,000 species of ants that have been identified, and it is widely believed that there are untold numbers more. There are six different species of ants in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware that need to be avoided. These pests are known to be social insects that live in elaborate underground communities as well as in trees, wooden constructions, and dirt mounds above ground.

Carpenter Ants

The ant is dark in color and has four different species and mainly infests homes built in wooded rural areas. They mostly nest in wood decayed by moisture or damage by other insects, however they do not damage fresh or new wood or “eat” wood as their name might imply. Generally, they forage for food, particularly at night.

Odorous House Ants

These ants’ lives throughout the United States but tend to be less in desert environments such as the Southwest. They range from black and brown in color and may be identified by the rotten coconut odor they release when crushed. The ants usually nest outdoors and usually makes nest on stacks of materials like stones, wood or cardboards. In the case of an indoor nest, they are often found near water sources such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Fire Ants

This ant has six different species, but the most troublesome species is referred to as the Red Imported Fire Ant and lives throughout the southern United States. The ant is mainly identified by its red, black or brown color with the abdomen darker than the rest of the body. They mainly nest in sunny open areas such as lawns, or molds of soil. The ant is turned aggressive especially if they nest on soil and the soil is disturbed. They feed mainly on protein foods and plants including seeds and fruits.

How Ant Infestation Occurs

Ants infestations mainly occur for various reasons and may cause various health risks to you and your family if the ant remover technique is not used. For example, a certain species of ant spreads typhoid fever while others damage, stain and soil clothes. The following are the reasons why ant infestation occurs;

Food supply especially sugary foods: When sweet foods lie around your home they are an excellent target for ants. Therefore the ants will penetrate through cracks, crevices, windows as well as walls. This makes it advisable to keep food in tightly closed containers and seal all cracks and crevices that may act as potential ant entry points.
The presence of an ant nest near your home: In the case of an ant nest inside or around your home there is a high probability that the ants will invade soon. To prevent various ant colonies from nesting around the home, you should have regular inspections of your home surroundings. That’s something we can do.

Techniques for Ant Removal and Extermination

Obviously, we have at our disposal a comprehensive suite of tools and techniques that we use to resolve any ant infestation problem. We see them every day, and we’ve seen it all. Before our experts decide on the technique to use for ant removal, we first identify the type of ant that has infested your home, and then we decide on the treatment. Below are some examples the types of treatments we might use, but this is by no means a complete list:
  • Identification of the ant nest and use of a chemical to attract the working ant which will bring the poisonous foods to the queen ant, killing her and subsequently killing the whole colony
  • Use of Boric acid (primarily sold as borax}: the acid is mixed with several ingredients such as honey or peanut butter or sugar and water. The mixture is then spread over the area where the ants have infested. The sugary ingredients attract the insects while the acid poisons them.
  • In situations where we must adhere to organic guidelines, we often use a vinegar mixture: the vinegar acid is obviously very acidic and therefore the carpenter ants try to avoid it. We have proprietary recipes, but we generally mix the acid and water in a ratio of 1:1, add ingredients such as garlic powder, pepper, and eucalyptus and apply it to ant trails and other telltale areas where we know the ants are traveling.
  • Use of ant honey pots which divert the ant’s attention to the honey pot and not your house. Our ant removal experts usually place a bowl with honey outside your home but not far from the ants camp. The ants will shift their attention to the honey pot and as they continue to feed we move the pot further from your home and spray them with insecticide sprays which eradicates them around your home environment
  • Use of baits and traps.
  • Sterilization discs that will sterilize the ant population and prevent them from reproducing.
